Akron is located in northwest Hale Country in the west-central part of Alabama. Akron was established in 1870 by what is now the Alabama Great Southern Railroad. Akron is the hometown of Riggs Stephenson, who played major-league baseball for the Cleveland Indians and Chicago Cubs.
